Information Regarding Web Browsers - Update

I’ve had quite a few emails and some messages left regarding how to remove this pop up over the last few days.

On five separate PCs, all I had to do was click the OK button on the first screen, then close the second screen, don’t just close the first screen with the  Information Regarding Web Browsers title.

I would definitely advise trying the above first, however if this doesn’t work for you I have another solution, BUT I must state I offer no guarantee that this will work and that it won’t kill your PC.

In other words, if you do it and it messes up your PC/windows don’t come looking to me!

The solution is to go into your windows installation, usually c:/windows, then the system32 folder, C:\WINDOWS\system32,  and look for a program called browserchoice.

Delete this program and you should not see anymore pop ups.

One thing to note with this method is you will need to remove this from windows update,  otherwise it will be reinstalled it the next time you update windows.

Let me know if this works for you or if you have a better solution.

  1. Hi,

Just wondering if you could tell me if this is a safe legitimate popup?

    Never come across it before.

    Thank you in advance

  3. Hi Elanor,

Yes this popup is safe, it’s from Microsoft, though you wouldn’t know it.

    Matt

  4. Another way to disable this is to run msconfig.
Under startup tab just uncheck browser choice.
Although this doesn’t remove it from your PC!

  5. Sorry forgot to mention this is achieved by START BUTTON>RUN> then type in “msconfig”. 6th tab along is the startup tab. On this tab is a list of other startrup items. Also useful to look at other startup items that could be slowing your PC down as well!!

  6. I’m looking for a simple registry hack to prevent the update from installing. (MS used to deliver “blocker tools” for professional environments…)

  7. I’m glad I Googled and found your site Matt, thanks, I shall follow your suggestions. Who’s the ‘brain’ behind such a pop-up? Why is there nothing identifying that it is genuine from Microsoft? I end up wasting so much of my time time trying to identify whether something is genuine these days. I’d love to meet the numpty who wrote this one and thwack them sharply on the head with my largerst wooden spoon.

  8. …if it’s not these kind of interruptions on my pc then it’s the phone ringing from ‘International’ that has been calling 3-4 times a day for the past week with nobody at the other end and no traceable number to call them back and tell them to STOP CALLING ME!

  9. cheers mate, a quick opening of the windows ’search’ function - into which i entered browserchoice.exe - threw up the crappy file in the two directories you mentioned (system 32 and software distribution) and from there I simply deleted the thing.

For anyone that wants to know which update it was, I can remember the title name mentions the EEA (European Economic Area) so keep an eye out for that if doing a manual install

    cheers again :)

BTW, on this note, I am off to check out a couple of the mentioned browsers LOL

  10. Many thanks for this help.
